Free writing with FreeWrite

02:11

I downloaded an app today called FreeWrite. It's a free one and it's an interesting one for Mac. It's not a journaling app or note-taking app.

It's designed to solely help you free write. Now the concept of free writing is that you literally start typing on a topic with a timer in place. You're not allowed to hit backspace. You're not allowed to stop writing. No fixing spelling even. Just keep writing. Once the timer's done, that's when you can stop.

So the goal is to stay on topic, stream of conscious, letting your mind wander on purpose. And I've never done that on a topic. I've never just freewheeled for a set period of time and let everything that comes to my mind get out into writing or even voice mode, maybe like this.

I think this is a really clever idea. They preset the timer at 15 minutes in the FreeWrite app, but I wonder what topics I can go on and on about for 15 minutes or 30 minutes or 45 minutes or four hours. Just stream of conscious.

What am I that savvy about? And what could it do for me if I simply explore everything I know about a topic, whether it's something I'm wrestling with or something I'm already an expert in? How good could it be for me to explore an idea like a piece of clay, just kind of mess with it, shape it, form it, let it sit there for maybe another 30 seconds, then revisit it, pick it up again as new ideas start flooding in my mind, and do that for 15 straight minutes.

Might be a good exercise to see how well I know the things I think I know and explore the things I think I know and explore the things I want to know.
